Family album captions identify the two sitters as "Marie Morris (1779-1852) m. Henry Nixon" and "Henrietta Morris (1777) m. James Marshall," daughters of Robert Morris the Financier (see lot 162), consistent with this painting's own reverse inscription naming the sitters as "Robt. Morris daughters" -- Maria Morris (Mrs. John Nixon) and Henrietta Morris (Mrs. Samuel Marshall). Large oil on canvas painting of two ladies playing chess at a green baize table, one in a white ruffled gown with flowing hair, the other in a turban and fur-trimmed gown, red drapery background. Signed "G. Gatti after Gilbert Stuart" lower right; reverse inscribed "Copy of Gilbert Stuart painting by Gabriel Gatti (2004)." Sight size 24in x 35in, frame 30in x 42in.
