Mannner of Sir Edwin Landseer, R.A. The back of the frame features a vintage gallery stamp from The Warwick Galleries (located at the N.W. Corner of 17th & Locust Sts., Philadelphia, PA). Below the stamp, a handwritten inscription reads: “Lion Reposing” Original Drawing by Sir E. Landseer, R.A. While the inscription attributes the work directly to the famous British painter and sculptor Sir Edwin Landseer (Royal Academician, 1802–1873)—renowned for designing the iconic bronze lions at Trafalgar Square—the composition also closely shares characteristics with the celebrated Statue of a Recumbent Lion by Italian master Antonio Canova. It is being offered in the manner of the period's great animalier masters.
