Rare Civil War Presentation Coin Silver 3-Piece Tea Service by Gorham (1865) An exceptional, historically significant three-piece American coin silver tea service manufactured by Gorham Mfg. Co.. This museum-quality presentation set includes a teapot, cream pitcher, and two-handled sugar bowl. It features a deeply detailed, hand-engraved commemorative presentation inscription from the Civil War era, dated June 25th, 1865. The center cartouche of the teapot is masterfully engraved with a dedication to a Union army medical officer:"A Token of Regard Presented by the Officers & Enlisted Men of Mount Pleasant Hospital Washington D.C. to DR. C.A. McCALL U.S.A. In Charge, June 25th 1865"The matching cream pitcher and sugar bowl bear his engraved moniker: "Dr. C.A. McCall U.S.A." Dr. Charles A. McCall served as an Assistant Surgeon for the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. He was placed in charge of the Mount Pleasant General Hospital in Washington, D.C., a major Union military hospital facility that treated thousands of casualties from the front lines. This set was presented to him by his men just two months after the war ended, following the surrender at Appomattox. 635 grams
