Pair of Japanese Satsuma porcelain baluster vases featuring hand-painted and heavily moriage enamel decorations. Each vase displays a primary panel depicting traditional immortal or scholar figures (including Kannon and a Luohan) with large gilded halos, set against a dark cobalt and black ground accented with raised gold scroll motifs and moriage slip details. The reverse panels show a landscape scene with overhanging pine branches, wisteria blooms, and distant mountains. Trimmed with rich gilt borders, floral bandings along the foot and neck, and raised red enamel beadwork around the collar. Shows light gilding loss, rub wear to the gold rims and painted accents, and fine overall glaze crazing typical of antique Satsuma earthenware. 9x5 in
