40.1*30cm
Monet appears in the painting as the sitter. Renoir makes no attempt to portray Monet as an idealised artist. Instead, he renders a highly individual and realistic figure. Holding palette and brushes in his painter's smock, Monet strikes a relaxed pose, pausing from his work to gaze toward his friend. His silhouette stands out vividly against the light streaming through the window. Light converges upon the painter's face, creating highlights across the upper part of his dark clothing. A tree with slender elongated leaves rises above Monet's head. Renoir may playfully be crowning his sitter with a laurel wreath. This light?hearted gesture may also account for the small round cap, which reads both as headgear and a halo. A rich variety of tonal values reinforces the canvas's lively, dynamic quality. Numerous small, thick juxtaposed brushstrokes animate the face, in sharp contrast to the long, parallel impasto strokes of white?grey paint on the right?hand side. At the Second Impressionist Exhibition of 1876, several critics remarked of Renoir: ??His work rivals Rembrandt, illuminated by the radiant splendour of Vel??zquez.??

ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD AS IS, WHERE IS, WITH NO RETURNS, REFUNDS, OR CANCELLATIONS.

Condition and Authenticity:

Any statement in the catalogue, condition report, photographs, video, invoice, or other written or oral communication regarding the origin, date, age, attribution, authorship, authenticity, provenance, material, condition, or estimated selling price of any lot is a statement of opinion only.
