A Story of West Point by Captain Charles King, U.S.A. (Harper & Brothers, New York, 1894 — first edition). Liabrary of Capt. Robert Ayres (1833–1905) The signature on the title page (“Capt. Robt. Ayres”) matches Captain Robert Ayres (born 22 November 1833, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; died 22 February 1905, Bradford County, Pennsylvania; buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Troy, PA). Unsuccessful applicant for a West Point cadetship as a young man.Enlisted 20 December 1855 in Company A, Miners and Sappers (later the Regular Engineer Battalion), U.S. Army, at Philadelphia.Promoted to Corporal; reenlisted at West Point, New York, on 27 November 1860.Served as First Sergeant, Company D, on the Peninsula Campaign and the Maryland Campaign (present with the Engineer Battalion around the time of Antietam).Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 19th United States Infantry, November 1862; became Adjutant of the First Battalion by May 1863.Wounded at Rossville, Georgia (September 1863, associated with the Chickamauga campaign).Promoted to First Lieutenant (November 1863).Captured at Ringgold, Georgia, on 22 February 1864. Held in Atlanta, briefly at Andersonville, then Camp Oglethorpe (Macon, Georgia). Escaped by tunneling under the stockade fence and rejoined Union forces at Fort Pickens, Florida, in June 1864.Brevet Captain, U.S.A., for gallant service at Chickamauga, Georgia, and Missionary Ridge (Mission Ridge), Tennessee (1863).Promoted to Captain in February 1866; served as regimental Adjutant into 1866; mustered out 1 January 1871.
