14" x 11" Matted Margaret Herrera Chávez was an American painter and printmaker. Born in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Chávez was the daughter of ranchers, and grew up in Gascon, in Mora County. She was one of the know handful of documented New Mexican artist, working locally from the 1950's through the 1960's. Margaret Herrera Chávez was born in 1912 in Las Vegas, New Mexico and grew up on a ranch in Gascon in Mora County. She is one of a handful of known and documented Nuevomexicana artists working in New Mexico from the 1950s through the 1960s. Experimental and prolific, she worked in various media including oils, watercolor, print, textiles, ceramics, and sculpture. The fluid lines and saturated colors of her work embody the rural landscapes and urban settings that compose the real and imagined character of New Mexico. She died in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1992.
