25-Character Title 4 Metlox Grape Plates (21) Alternates: Metlox Sculptured Grape (23) Metlox Grape Small Plates (25) 4 Poppytrail Grape Plate (24) HiBid DESCRIPTION FOUR VINTAGE METLOX POPPYTRAIL "SCULPTURED GRAPE" SMALL PLATES - HAND-PAINTED EMBOSSED BLUE GRAPES, GREEN AND GRAY-GREEN LEAVES, BROWN VINE RIM - MARKED "POPPYTRAIL BY METLOX - MADE IN CALIFORNIA" Four matching small plates in the Metlox Poppytrail Sculptured Grape pattern, the same California pottery pattern as the cup and saucer sets offered separately in this sale. Each plate has a gently scalloped rim with a continuous band of embossed and hand-painted grape clusters in soft blue, leaves in green and gray-green, and gold-yellow blossom sprigs with brown curling tendrils, all on a warm off-white ground, and the rim edge itself is finished with a hand-brushed brown vine line that follows the scallops. The relief is crisp and the brushwork varies slightly from plate to plate, which is normal for this line. All four carry the circular backstamp reading "POPPYTRAIL BY METLOX - MADE IN CALIFORNIA." These are a practical buy for anyone filling out a Sculptured Grape service, and they also display well upright on a plate rack or hutch, or grouped on a wall. Note the condition points below: all four plates show clear overall crazing to the glaze in the well, along with utensil marking and light rim wear, so these are best treated as display and light-use pieces rather than everyday dinnerware. Description Form: four small round plates, most consistent in size with a bread-and-butter or dessert plate, with a scalloped and slightly ruffled rim, a plain recessed well, and a low foot ring. Decoration: embossed grape-and-leaf border, hand-painted in blue, two shades of green, gray-green, and gold-yellow, with brown painted vine tendrils and a brown hand-brushed line along the rim edge. The centers are plain. Marks, quoted verbatim: the underside of each plate carries the circular stamp "POPPYTRAIL BY METLOX - MADE IN CALIFORNIA." The stamps photographed are legible but partly rubbed, with letters skipped in "POPPYTRAIL" on both plates shown. No pattern name, mold number, or date code is present, so none is claimed. Dimensions: approximately 6-3/4 inches in diameter per the tape-measure photograph. The tape hook is set on the far rim of the plate and the reading is taken at the near rim, and the camera is slightly off center, so this is a close estimate. For comparison, replacement-china references list the Sculptured Grape bread-and-butter plate at about 6-1/4 inches and the salad plate at about 7-1/2 inches, so buyers matching a service should measure their own pieces rather than relying on this figure.
