THREE FRANCISCAN DESERT ROSE WINE GOBLETS - SIGNED CLEAR GLASS STEMWARE Three clear glass stemmed wine goblets in the Franciscan Desert Rose pattern, approximately 6-1/2 inches tall with a rounded balloon bowl roughly 3-1/4 inches across the rim. Each is decorated around the bowl with the Desert Rose motif carried over from the dinnerware: full opened pink wild roses with bright yellow centers dotted in dark brown, closed pink buds, small round rose hips, and bright green leaves on trailing stems, all against clear glass so the decoration appears to float. One side of each bowl carries the pattern's red script Franciscan trademark, which is the maker's signature on the glassware line and the surest identifier on a piece of Franciscan glass. Stemware in this pattern was sold as a companion to the earthenware rather than as part of the basic place setting, so it turns up far less often than the plates and cups. These would round out any of the Desert Rose dinnerware, plates, saucers, cup and saucer sets, bowls, gravy boat, cookie jar, or bud vase offered elsewhere in this sale, and they display well on an open shelf or in a glass-front cabinet. Sold as a lot of three pieces. Description Three (3) matching Franciscan Desert Rose wine goblets, clear pressed and blown glass with applied color decoration Rounded balloon-form bowl on a slender plain stem and a broad plain circular disc foot Each measures approximately 6-1/2 inches tall per the tape-measure photograph, with the tape hooked on the table surface beside the glass rather than against it, so read the height as a close estimate Bowl measures approximately 3-1/4 inches across the rim per the overhead tape photograph, with the tape laid across the mouth. Foot diameter and bowl capacity were not measured with the tape, and bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs Decoration wraps the bowl: opened five-petal pink roses with bright yellow centers dotted in dark brown, closed pink buds, small round rose hips, and bright green leaves on trailing green stems, applied in opaque color on the outside of the clear glass Each bowl carries the red script Franciscan trademark with the registered symbol beside it, applied in the decoration alongside the roses and shown in the close-up photograph. This is the maker's mark on this piece Bowl interiors, stems, and feet are plain clear glass with no decoration, cutting, or etching Undersides of the feet are plain and smooth with no acid stamp, paper label, or additional mark shown in the photographs Attribution note Desert Rose was introduced in 1941 by Gladding, McBean & Co. of Los Angeles, California, and became the best-selling pattern of American dinnerware ever produced, with California manufacture continuing into the mid-1980s.
