Oil on canvas, framed. Attributed to Gertrude Abercrombie (1909–1977). Depicting a surreal coastal landscape with a female figure in an orange dress standing before a pale spectral form supporting an owl with outstretched wings, set near a red Victorian house under a bright sky, the composition reflects Abercrombie’s mature dream-state vocabulary, defined by sparse staging, symbolic animals, and psychologically charged stillness. Signed Gertrude Abercrombie ’53 at the lower right. Label on verso: Galeries Associated American Artists. 61 x 40.6 cm (24" x 16"), framed: 81.3 x 63.5 cm (32" x 25"). Works featuring similarly enigmatic female figures, owls, isolated architecture, and distilled surreal atmospheres appear in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and the Kansas City Art Institute, all holding paintings that share comparable surreal restraint and symbolic clarity.
