An authentic-style brass miners’ safety lamp by E. Thomas & Williams Ltd., Aberdare, Wales, a firm well known for its traditional Welsh mining lamps. Constructed in brass with a cylindrical upper bonnet, vented domed top, protective vertical rods and a glass-enclosed burner chamber. The applied/embossed maker’s plaque reads: “E. Thomas & Williams Ltd. / Approved Under Schedule / Cambrian Type No. 1 / Makers Aberdare.” These safety lamps were designed to provide illumination in underground mines while enclosing the flame to reduce the danger of igniting combustible mine gases. E. Thomas & Williams of Aberdare became one of the best-known Welsh manufacturers associated with this type of mining equipment.
