Canadian [b. 1935] ST. ANN'S; 1986 oil on masonite 24 x 30 in. (61 x 76.2 cm) signed, titled and dated lower left Provenance: La Galerie Continentale, Montreal QC (label verso) Note: This painting is illustrated in the gallery invitation card for the exhibition (Oct. 21-Nov 1, 1986) and on the artist's biography page from the time. Both promotional items accompany the painting. St. Ann's Church, built in 1854, was for many years the heart of Griffintown, a working class, Irish-catholic Montreal community. The church was demolished in 1970 and the location is now the site of Parc Griffintown-St-Ann. This nostalgic scene hearkens back to Tomalty's childhood - the artist, raised in a strong Irish household, played hockey growing up, and later for the Montreal Royals.
