Lincoln Wheat Cent Date Illegible Corroded

A copper Lincoln wheat cent in a stapled 2x2 flip the consignor wrote 1944 - D on. The coin will not support that. The date is not legible on the coin. The attribution comes from the consignor's flip and is unverified. Under magnification the date shows 194 and then a digit buried under corrosion, and the mint mark area is covered by crust, so no letter reads at all. Condition is severe: heavy green verdigris covers both faces along with brown-black crust and soil encrustation, Lincoln's portrait is nearly obliterated down to the outline of the bust, the reverse wheat ears are almost gone with ONE CENT barely traceable, and two long gouge lines cross the reverse field. Surfaces are rough and granular, with the look of a ground find. Bidders should know that active green verdigris can keep working on copper in storage. This sells as an unattributed circulated wheat cent, not as a 1944-D. Estimated Value: $0.25 to $1. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot.
