On March 7, 1965 in Selma, Alabama about 600 peaceful civil-rights demonstrators, led by John Lewis and Hosea Williams, attempted to march roughly 54 miles from Selma to Montgomery to protest the systematic denial of African Americans' voting rights. At the Edmund Pettus Bridge, they were confronted by approximately 150 Alabama state troopers, sheriff's deputies, and possemen, who attacked the marchers with clubs, tear gas, whips and other weapons; the nationally televised violence became known as Bloody Sunday. This helmet was worn by a KKK member who was one of those 150 troopers, deputies and possemen.
