Background Check: • Federal Check: When buying from a licensed store, you must fill out ATF Form 4473 and pass a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System • Permit Exception: North Carolina repealed its pistol purchase permit law in 2023, so you no longer need a permit from the sheriff's office to buy a handgun. However, if you hold a valid North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) with your current address, it may be used in place of going through the standard NICS background check process at the counter. _tranfer fee $10 per gun
