engraved calabash wall hanging plate, a traditional handicraft from Mali. Artisans achieve this style using pyrography and relief engraving. The surface skin of the gourd is scraped away, and a heated blade or hot iron poker is used to burn complex designs into the wood. The central fish pattern combined with fine geometric cross-hatch lines is common among Malian riverine communities. Measures approximately 7X7.5 inches.
