Unique selection of an antique pair of books, perfect for any collector. Set in two separated volumes, the featured book is entitled “The Congo and the Founding of Its Free State” and was written by Henry M. Stanley. This is a highly collectible first American edition of the work, published by Harper & Brothers of New York in 1885. The book details Stanley’s historic expeditions through the Congo River basin between 1879 and 1884. It was commissioned by King Leopold II of Belgium, and this primary historical account serves as a cornerstone piece for collectors of 19th-century African exploration, cartography, and imperial history. This set is in solid antique condition, easily exhibiting some shelf ware but items with great presentation. There appears to be no loose pages per general overview and the large folding maps are included in the back of each volume. It appears that these books were given as a Christmas gift as the original owner’s name and “December 25, 1887” is written in the front excerpt of the books. The book’s spine especially holds good presentation even though there is some elemental surface wear. Books measure approx. 9” H x 6.25” W each.
