Chinese WC on Silk Handscroll Signed Wang Hui

Watercolor on silk, handscroll. Attributed to Wang Hui (1632–1717) The scroll opens with a calligraphic title panel bordered in brocade, followed by a continuous scene of mountainous terrain, riverine passages, and traditional pavilions, all depicted with meticulous brushwork and compositional balance characteristic of the Orthodox School. The lower section includes a colophon in classical Chinese script. Signed Wang Hui on top left corner. Wang Hui, a leading figure among the Four Wangs of the early Qing dynasty, was known for synthesizing the stylistic idioms of Song and Yuan masters, particularly those of Dong Yuan, Juran, and Huang Gongwang, into a codified visual language that became the standard for court-sponsored painting. His technique emphasized layered ink washes, rhythmic brushstrokes, and a scholarly reverence for antiquity. Comparable works by Wang Hui are held in major institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (e.g., The Kangxi Emperor’s Southern Inspection Tour), the British Museum, the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
