Ambrotype of a Seated Gentleman w/ Leaf

Nineteenth-century ambrotype depicting a seated gentleman in a patterned vest, presented under a gilt brass mat. The image has scattered surface deterioration. Case measures 2 1/4 x 2 7/8 in. I'm sure the leaf meant something to someone. What stories could it tell?
