Unique selection of a framed piece of art, perfect for home display. This piece formally appears to be untitled, but it was produced by artist Marie Perrault (alternatively also as Ida Marie Perrault). It appears to be an exceptionally rare, beautifully realized and original multi-figure narrative pastel painting by the noted American Impressionist artist. Painted during the artist’s celebrated European tenure (1905-1911), this piece captures a tender, intimate moment of domestic life in a Dutch village. A mother stands at her table cutting a piece of bread, getting ready to serve. One child is seated at the table, and another infant is seated on the ground. Appearing to pastel on paper or board and under glass, Perrault’s mastery of the medium is on full display here. The artist used rich, velvety layers of loose pigment directly on the paper to build form, texture, and atmospheric depth. Additionally, the rendering of interior light softly catches the figures with a warm and luminous quality. Born in Detroit, Marie Perrault (Ida Marie Perrault) studied extensively in Paris and the Netherlands. It appears that this specific artwork originates from her highly collectable “Holland Period” During this timeframe, her paintings of local mothers and children gained international acclaim, leading to prominent exhibitions. Works for this era featuring complex family scenes are considered her most desirable and historically significant. Framed and under glass, the overall presentation in frame measures 21” H x 25” W with the interior piece approximately 15.5” H x 19” W. It is housed in its original, period-appropriate ornate gilded frame. Another interesting aspect that connects with its history of sale is that the painting bears the complete, authentic mid-century gallery label from Marshall Field & Company Picture Galleries out of Chicago, one of the Midwest’s premier fine art venues of the 20th century. The picture fame does has some subtle wear due to its age, but this adds to its historical atmosphere of it all.
