Unique selection of a framed piece of art, perfect for any collector or home display. The selection is formally titled “Portrait of Thomas Haaringh” but it is universally referred to as “The Old Harringh”. The portrait is a three-quarter length view of an elderly man sitting in a high-backed armchair and is a noted masterclass on the usage of light and shadow. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is a universally acknowledged artist from within the Dutch Golden Age and was one of the most innovative printmakers in history. Rembrandt mastered everything from grand oil paintings to intimate landscape sketches and portraits. His signature contribution to art was his mastery of the dramatic contrast between extreme light and deep shadow. The subject of Thomas Haaringh himself lived from 1586-1660 and served as the concierge and chief administrator of the Amsterdam Town Hall. His official duties included acting as the bailiff to the Court of Insolvents. Ironically, Haaringh was tasked with managing bankruptcy proceedings and coordinating forced public auctions for which the artist Rembrandt had to undergo with his personal art collections and possessions between 1656 to 1658. The original representation of this work was produced by Rembrandt Van Rijn around 1655 (prior to the forced auction proceedings) but this direct copy is a copper plated etching on cream laid paper. It is assumed that this print was most likely printed by Armand Durand in 1880 who was commissioned by the Louvre Museum to recreate Rembrandt’s etchings. As this was a limited print run of the time, the item as it stands today is an extremely rare piece in preservation. The artwork itself is neatly contained within a frame and under glass. The frame and picture itself is in excellent with no visible wear upon general inspection. Picture in frame measures 22.5” H x 20.5” W. with the interior print considerably smaller at approx. 9” H x 7” W. Item comes with an original Certificate of Authenticity.
