Unique selection of a vintage piece of framed art, perfect for collecting and home display. This selection is entitled “Gertrude Stein” and it was produced by artist Robert Indiana. The piece is a pop art display showcasing a costumed dress, hat, and sash on a simple black and white background. The backstory on the piece begins with Robert Indiana being commissioned to design the sets and costumes for a production of “The Mother of Us All”, an opera about the life of Susan B. Anthony. The opera itself was created by Gertrude Stein and Virl Thomson, who themselves are also characters in their own creation. Indiana created over 200 paper collages for the 1967 premiere in which he was involved with. A decade later, he memorialized his theatrical work by releasing a portfolio of patriotic lithographs from the production. The dedicated portrait print titled “Gertrude Stein” was amongst these prints. This print is framed, matted and under glass with the overall presentation measuring 28.5” H x 24” W. The interior picture measures 20” H x 15.5” W. Frame has some very minor wear, but the print is in excellent shape. The lower left-hand corn features the print number of “113/150” in what appears to be handwritten pencil signature. The bottom right-hand corner appears to hold the signature of “R Indiana” and “’77.
