(Maynard), who filed intentions Nov. 7, 1836, at Leominster. In the 1870 & 1880 census, this family resided in Bethlehem, NY, where Josiah was a R.R. agent. Served as a major on the Field & Staff of the 21st New York Cavalry. Previously served as captain of the 24th New York National Guard Infantry. Commissioned as captain and commanding officer of Co. A, 2nd New York Volunteer Infantry, on Aug 1, 1861, discharged on Oct. 13, 1863; enlisted Oct. 16, 1863, in the 21st New York Cavalry; commissioned as major on Nov. 20, 1864, with rank from Oct. 15, 1863; mustered out Sept 9, 1865, at Denver, Colorado Terr. Pension application (Invalid) no. 552965; cert. no. 343458; applied for Oct 28, 1885. Admitted Feb. 9, 1887, to U.S. Home for Disabled Vol. Soldiers, Hampton, VA. Disability listed as rheumatism, heart disease, and possibly wound in leg. Recorded on 1890 Vet's schedule: "died 9:30 am; 13_10_97; Body Sent Home".
