1987 Sanibel Causeway Internal Use Employee Token. Scarce. Designed with identical faces on both sides (and cataloged as TC-652288), this token was never officially released or put into circulation. This token we offer here was never put into circulation, as, according to the September 1992 issue of 'The Fare Box' these were used internally by toll collectors, not by the persons paying the causeway toll (as was the original intention). As early as 1912 a car ferry serviced Sanibel, but the idea of establishing a bridge was controversial in that the locals feared the onslaught of tourism. In due course there was too much pressure on the ferry service and after several hurricanes and the wildfire of 1955 an easier way to get on and off the island was needed. It took about a year and a half to complete the Causeway which was opened in 1963. Found submerged off the causeway area which may explain its oxidation.
