An antique needlework sampler worked in colored threads on a natural linen ground. The piece features uppercase and lowercase alphabets, numerals, decorative borders, and darning patterns. It is signed Ruth Cleas and dated 1778. Thesampler is housed in a polished wood frame with a gallery label from the Neville-Sargent Gallery on the reverse. Frame measures 12.5 x 16.5 inches.The sampler shows significant deterioration with large areas of loss and fraying to the linen ground, particularly along the bottom and left edges. Staining and foxing are present throughout. Thread colors are faded. The wood frame has minor surface
