1900-O/CC Rare Over mint Error Morgan Dollar

Some of these coins the actual over mint error can be difficult to see. That IS NOT the case here. It is loud and proud. An Excellent Almost Uncirculated Version of this coin. The 1900-O/CC Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most famous and highly sought-after over-mintmark error varieties in American numismatics. It is officially recognized as a "Top 100" VAM variety by collectors. The History Behind the Error. The Carson City Mint (CC) in Nevada stopped striking Morgan Dollars in 1893 and completely ceased minting operations. In the spirit of "waste not, want not," the leftover, unused working coin dies from Carson City were shipped back to the main Philadelphia Mint.Seven years later, in 1900, the New Orleans Mint (O) requested more silver dollar dies. Rather than making new ones from scratch, Philadelphia workers took the old Carson City dies and punched the New Orleans "O" directly over the existing "CC" mintmark. However, they failed to completely erase the original "CC" mark. On the final struck coins, the faint, ghostly twin loops of the "CC" are visibly sticking out from underneath and around the edges of the "O".
