The burnt finish helps them last without painting or sealing, making them sturdy and rain-resistant. The wood grain shows through, and they blend naturally into their outdoor surroundings than raw wood, giving owls a natural home. Additionally, they offer a great nesting space for smaller owl species such as screech owls, flammulated owls, northern pygmy owls, elf owls, Sinaloa pygmy owls, and least pygmy owls as well as small raptors like American kestrels and other small raptor species, letting you enjoy watching these birds settle in and thrive. LARGER THAN STANDARD OWL BOXES: With dimensions of 11 12 14 inches, this box can accommodate mother owls and 2-3 young owls, with ample room to prevent eggs from being crushed. As young owls grow, they may stay longer here, practicing wing flapping to prepare for their first flights a delightful sight. The generous space not only allows them to stretch more freely, but also reduces the risk of fatal falls during fledging (when their flight strength is still weak). GREAT VENTILATION AND MOISTURE CONTROL: The cut corners at the bottom and top vent holes are simple but effective, letting the box breathe, prevent moisture buildup, avoid overheating (and owl abandonment), and boost nesting success especially in hot climates. The slot on the back panel eliminates assembly gaps between the back panel and the roof, preventing heavy rain from seeping in, and the saw kerfs under the roof channel rainwater away as well. The two drainage holes in the bottom further drain any seeped-in rain. Screw caps on the roof prevent rust and stop water from leaking in and moisture from seeping through screws. SAFETY DESIGN: No exterior perches (predators could use them as ladders). The front kerfs are cut for non-slip climbing, and interior grooves and step bars facilitate easy exiting. A sloped, overhanging roof not only keeps the box dry but also prevents predators from entering the nest; the 3-inch opening is an attractive size for owls, and this small entrance provides extra protection for female owls when nesting and raising their young.
