This archival group documents the rise of pop vocalist Mariah Carey during her initial period of superstardom from 1990 to 1993. The centerpieces include a large-format vertical commercial poster published by Winterland Productions forRock Express featuring a portrait of the artist in an off-the-shoulder top and denim, and a cardboard record store counter standee for the 1993 album Music Box issued by Columbia Records. The standee features a sepia-toned portrait on thefront and a list of previously released titles on the easel-back reverse. The collection also comprises an assortment of eight period magazines, including a March 1991 issue of JET, an April 1992 issue of YM, and various issues of PeopleWeekly, US Magazine, and CD Review. Additional ephemera consists of full newspaper pages and clippings from USA TODAY dating to 1991, covering Carey's debut Grammy nominations and career growth, alongside a promotional program for the 18thThe collection is in a gentle, well-preserved state for paper items of this vintage. The poster shows light horizontal creasing and small pinholes at the corners from previous mounting. The magazines are generally tidy.
