INB 1942-D Early Jefferson Nickel INB Slabbed This 1942-D Jefferson Nickel is housed in an International Numismatic Bureau (INB) protective slab. Struck at the Denver Mint, this early-issue copper-nickel coin features the classic portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and his Monticello estate on the reverse. The D mint mark is clearly visible to the right of the building on the reverse side. This specific 1942 issue is the copper-nickel variety, as the transition to the silver "War Nickel" alloy occurred later that same year with the introduction of the large mint marks above the dome. This uncirculated or lightly circulated specimen serves as a significant historical artifact from the early years of the Jefferson series and the beginning of the United States' involvement in World War II. 1942-D Jefferson Silver War Nickel INB Slabbed Condition: The coin is housed in an International Numismatic Bureau (INB) holder, which classifies it as an Early Jefferson Nickel. The physical condition shows significant circulation wear, with flattened details on Jefferson's hair and the building's features on the reverse. The surfaces appear darkened with aged patina. The mint mark is a large D located above the dome of Monticello, which is the key diagnostic for the silver alloy used during this era. The metal content is 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, as indicated by the presence of the large mint mark above the dome. Historically, this coin was produced during World War II when nickel was a critical war material; consequently, the U.S. Mint changed the composition to a silver alloy from late 1942 through 1945. This is a business strike type coin minted at the Denver Mint. While the coin is in an INB holder, it does not feature a specific numeric grade on the label.
