Oil on canvas, framed. Attributed to Thomas Hart Benton (1889–1975). Depicting an animated interior gathering with dancers, musicians, and seated onlookers arranged within a brightly colored room featuring arched windows, a hanging lamp, and a wall sign reading “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” the composition reflects Benton’s mature Regionalist style, defined by rhythmic, sculptural figuration, strong contouring, and dynamic movement across tightly organized spaces. Signed Benton at the lower right. Label on verso of Galeries Associated American Artist NY. 80 x 51 cm (31.5" x 20"), framed: 101.6 x 72.3 cm (40" x 28.5'). The emphasis on communal activity, expressive body language, and warm, saturated color aligns with themes central to Benton’s work from the 1930s–1950s, where he frequently portrayed American social life, music, and vernacular interiors with sweeping forms and narrative clarity. Comparable works featuring musical gatherings, expressive crowds, and curvilinear modeling appear in major institutional collections, including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, all holding works that demonstrate similar narrative structure, figural stylization, and regionalist subject matter.
