Four-color jacquard coverlet in navy, red, green, and natural, the corner block lettered "Made by / D. Cosley, / Xenia / Greene Co, / Ohio. / 1849", the field consisting of floral medallions and sunbursts with floral centers and lyres surrounding, the borders with floral urns, two holes (1 1/2" diameter and 3/4" diameter) near center of top edge, areas of fringe loss, a few light stains, scattered wear commensurate with age and use, 94" x 78". Dennis Cosley was born in Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1816. He and his brother George trained as weavers in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, where they opened a mill in 1844. When fire destroyed that facility two years later, the pair relocated to Xenia, Greene County, Ohio, where business records indicate Dennis owned a coverlet and carpet factory until 1864.
