Woodland landscape by Charles Frederick Whitney (American, 1858-1949), watercolor and gouache, signed, depicting trees flanking a stream, 6" x 4 1/4" (sight), 12 3/4" x 9 3/4" (frame), the paper on the back of the frame having a sticker for Traxel Art Company of Cincinnati. ÿ Charles Frederick Whitney was born in Pittston, Maine. A painter, illustrator, and art teacher, he studied at the Massachusetts State Normal Art School. He specialized in watercolor landscapes and seascapes of the Eastern United States. Whitney published several books used in art instruction, and taught at the Wheelock School in Boston. He also taught at the Summer Camp (Camp Vision) at Tamworth, New Hampshire. He exhibited widely in the New England area during his career and studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. His works are held in their collection.
