Antique Chinese Carved & Polychrome Wood Armchair

Updated August 22, 2026

...with Figural Panels and Fretwork. 21"W, 17"D, 26"H An unusual antique Chinese carved wooden armchair, likely dating to the late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1900–1930. The chair features a tall open back centered by a decorative splat with two carved and polychrome-painted figural panels, retaining muted shades of red, green, ochre and black. The back is further accented with pierced geometric fretwork, while the open arms incorporate carved scrolling cloud-form motifs. A broad reddish-toned plank seat rests above a substantial box-form base with short legs, giving the chair a distinctive architectural, almost throne-like presence. The chair displays considerable age-related surface wear and patina, including finish loss, scratches, abrasions, small losses, discoloration and wear around the joints and edges, as shown. These characteristics contribute considerably to its aged appearance and decorative character. Please review photographs carefully for condition. An appealing piece of Chinese antique furniture with particularly attractive surviving figural decoration and an unusual form. Period: Late 19th/Early 20th Century, attributed Origin: China Material: Carved and painted wood Condition: Antique condition with substantial age-related wear, losses and surface imperfections as photographed. The arms are somewhat loose and could be tightened. WE would say this is more for decor than practical use due to age. Also, it's low and sit close to the floor. Dimensions: [add measurements] Dating and origin are based on style and construction and are offered as an attribution rather than a documented provenance.
