Vintage Japanese Hinomaru National Flag

Vintage Japanese Hinomaru National Flag – Old Textile Flag – Approx. 38" x 27.5" Vintage Japanese national flag, or Hinomaru (???), featuring the traditional red sun disc centered on a white field. Measuring approximately 38" x 27.5", the flag is constructed from a lightweight, somewhat sheer woven fabric. The large central red sun is printed or dyed directly onto the fabric rather than being a separately sewn appliqué. Close examination shows some irregularity and migration of the red color around the perimeter of the disc, characteristic of the method used to apply the color to the fabric. Of particular interest are the reinforced triangular corner tabs with attached cord ties. The tabs are stitched to the corners and appear to be made from a coated or treated material. Photographs include close-up views of the stitching, ties and construction. The flag displays considerable evidence of age, including overall toning, scattered spotting/discoloration, fold lines, wrinkles and some edge wear/fraying. The red sun remains remarkably strong and visually striking. A photograph taken under ultraviolet/black light is included to show the reaction of the fabric, thread and reinforced corner material. UV examination can provide useful information when evaluating older textiles, although it should not by itself be considered proof of a particular date. The construction, materials and overall appearance suggest an older Japanese flag and are compatible with examples dating to the first half of the 20th century. It may potentially date to the World War II era or earlier, but without documented provenance an exact date or wartime use cannot be guaranteed. Exact age and WWII association have not been independently authenticated.
