John James Audubon "Iceland or Jer Falcon" (Falco Islandicus), Female Birds, from the scarce Julius Bien chromolithographic edition of The Birds of America, produced in New York circa 1858-1860. The Julius Bien edition represents one of the most important early reproductions of Audubon’s monumental Birds of America. Unlike later 20th-century decorative reproductions, the Bien edition was produced during the 19th century using chromolithography and at approximately the original double-elephant-folio scale. Presented under glass with wide matting in a substantial oak frame. Professionally framed by The Rabbit Hole Fine Custom Framing, Geneseo, New York. Condition: Attractive overall appearance with strong visible color. Age-related toning, spotting, discoloration and other imperfections are visible, particularly within the exposed margins; please examine all photographs carefully. Reflections visible in photographs are from the protective glass and are not necessarily defects in the print. Print has not been removed from the frame for inspection. Consequently, the complete sheet dimensions, hidden margins, reverse, mounting method and condition beneath the mat have not been examined or verified. Frame exhibits expected minor wear. Note: This lot is being offered as a period Julius Bien edition Audubon chromolithograph based upon the visible title, numbering, inscriptions and characteristics. Prospective bidders should rely upon the provided photographs and conduct any additional research they deem appropriate prior to bidding. SELLS SUBJECT TO RESERVE.
