Seller: Keira Watkin Group Affiliation: Lone Pine 4-H Species: Rabbit Dear__________________________________________, Hello, My name is Keira Watkin and I am a member of the Lone Pine 4-H club in Chico, CA. I am 13 years old and going into 8th grade at Bidwell Junior High and my 2nd year in 4-H. I also play soccer and enjoy doing musical theater and playing alto saxophone in the school band. Last year was my first year raising and showing my own market rabbits. I participated in the Silver Dollar Livestock Expo and placed Reserve Champion in Market class with my Californian rabbits that I bred myself at home. I was humbled and proud that I did so well with the rabbits I bred and raised. I had a great fair and I am excited to be showing again at the Butte County Fair. This summer I was not able to breed my rabbits in time for the Butte County Fair so I will be showing my pen of 3 rabbits that I purchased from a friend and have been raising. They are of the same quality as my breeding stock at home and I hope to do well with these little guys also! I have been working hard to keep my rabbits cool and comfortable this summer. I discovered if I feed them right before I go to bed that they tolerate the heat better. They prefer to eat late in the evening and early morning when it is cooler. I have fans, misters and shade for them. I have also brought them inside when it gets too hot! I give my rabbits fresh hay and pellets daily, unlimited water and supplements to help them grow big and healthy with quality meat. Did you know rabbit meat is one of the best sources of protein for you? According to NIH.gov, Rabbit meat is a highly digestible, tasty, low-calorie food, often recommended by nutritionists over other meats. You can use rabbit instead of chicken in just about any recipe! Raising my rabbits has been a great experience and I look forward to continuing to breed and raise them for myself and other 4-Hers in the future. With the money I hope to receive from the auction, I plan to donate 10% to the Ronald McDonald House charities as they helped my family when my older brother was sick. I plan to save 50% in my savings account for my school trip to Washington DC this year and the last 40% will go back into my rabbit breeding project. I will be showing my rabbits at the Butte County Fair on Wednesday, August 26th and I will sell my pen of 3 market rabbits on Saturday, August 29th. I invite you to come on down to the fairgrounds and see all the animals and hard work myself and the other youth have put in. Thank you, Keira Watkin
