An exceptionally ornate Italian 18th century giltwood console table, surmounted by a dramatically shaped white marble top with gray veining and molded serpentine edge, the sculptural base conceived as an exuberant display of scrolling acanthus, flowers, shellwork, and figural ornament. The pierced apron is centered by a highly animated carved putto or grotesque mask figure emerging amid dense floral and foliate swags, while the sides are supported by boldly curved legs enriched with twisted columns, cascading blossoms, leafage, and hoof-form feet. A broad scrolling stretcher joins the supports below, centered by a large shell-and-foliate crest and creating a particularly theatrical, architectural profile characteristic of richly carved Italian decorative furniture of the period. The carving appears to be giltwood and composition/gesso with an aged gold-toned surface showing attractive variation and patina throughout. The white marble top exhibits scattered light staining and oxidation-colored spots, surface scratches and chips; on back edge and the carved base shows expected age-related rubbing, losses and abrasions to gilding, and separations, and areas of wear to projecting carved elements, all consistent with its elaborate construction and age. Measures 37"H x 63"W x 25.5"D.
