?? EXCEPTIONAL EARLY WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 — .45-70 GOV’T — 1888 ?? A true piece of the American West and one of Winchester’s most legendary big-bore lever-action rifles. This early-production Winchester Model 1886, serial #26031, dates to 1888 and is chambered in the highly desirable .45-70 Government caliber. It features a long octagon barrel, period blued finish and peep sight — a classic and imposing early Winchester configuration. Designed by legendary firearms inventor John Moses Browning, the Model 1886 was engineered specifically to handle the powerful large-bore cartridges demanded by hunters and sportsmen of the American frontier. Adding to its story, this rifle was reportedly ordered through a general store using a Winchester paper order form, providing a fascinating connection to how these rifles were purchased and delivered nearly 140 years ago. .45-70 GOV’T. Five-digit serial number. Octagon barrel. Browning design. Early Winchester. A centerpiece firearm for the serious Winchester, Old West or historic firearms collector.
