LE CHAPEAU EPINGLE SERIES, ALSO KNOWN AS "THE DAUGHTER OF BERTE MORISOT AND HER COUSIN. 40x47cm 8x12 cm 1. Series Background In 1894, Renoir created five distinct etchings around this theme, which were not mere reproductions but rather different interpretations of the same subject. This piece is the third plate (3e Planche) in the series, cataloged as Delteil/Stella 8 in art history records, and is the most renowned and widely circulated version within the set. 2. Characteristics of the Version Compared to the first two plates, this one features looser, more fluid lines that closely resemble the hazy, warm brushwork characteristic of Renoir??s oil paintings. The outlines of the figures are simplified, with swift cross-hatching used to model light and shadow, fully capturing the Impressionist essence of "capturing a moment." 3. Publication and Collecting Value - It was originally published as the frontispiece for Volume III of the art journal *La Vie Artistique*, hence its nickname "the Third Plate." - Renoir's prints are inherently rare, and surviving original works from this series are particularly uncommon, making it a significant collection item in major museums such as the National Gallery of Art and the Nelson-Atkins Museum.
