Cutter mattock (often referred to as a "grub axe"), which features a long wooden handle and a dual-sided forged iron head. Tool Design and Anatomy • The Adze Blade: The wide, horizontal flat end is designed like a grubbing hoe. It slices through turf, scoops out soil, and levers out rocks or stubborn roots. • The Cutter Blade: The narrow, vertical axe-like end is balanced opposite the adze. It is oriented vertically to easily chop straight down through thick tree roots and buried wood. • Slip-Eye Connection: The handle thickens near the bottom so that the heavy metal head is slid on from the top. The centrifugal force from swinging the tool naturally wedges the head tighter onto the wood during use.
