Orenthal James Simpson was a highly complex and polarizing figure in American history, transforming from a beloved sports icon and Hollywood actor into the center of the most heavily publicized criminal trial of the 20th century. Won the 1968 Heisman Trophy while playing for the USC Trojans. Drafted number one overall in 1969, he played primarily for the Buffalo Bills. He became the first NFL player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season (1973) and was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Transitioned into a successful on-screen career, famously starring in The Naked Gun movie trilogy and appearing in numerous national commercials. In June 1994, Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman, were found brutally murdered outside her Los Angeles home. Simpson was quickly identified as the prime suspect. The 11-month criminal trial became a global media circus. Represented by a high-profile legal defense team dubbed the "Dream Team" (including Johnnie Cochran, Robert Shapiro, and F. Lee Bailey), Simpson was acquitted of the murders on October 3, 1995. The verdict deeply divided the American public along racial and socio-economic lines. Though cleared of criminal charges, Simpson was targeted by the victims' families in a 1997 civil lawsuit. The civil jury found him liable for the wrongful deaths of Brown and Goldman, ordering him to pay $33.5 million in damages. The Goldman family eventually seized the rights to his controversial ghostwritten book project, If I Did It. O.J. Simpson died at the age of 76 on April 10, 2024, following a diagnosis of prostate cancer.
