1978 original release of the Series D pictorial issue. The note features the green printed signature of J.B. Page (Jo Page). He served as the Chief Cashier for the Bank of England from 1970 to 1980. The 1981 Change: In 1980, D.H.F. Somerset took over as Chief Cashier. The updated 1981 variants feature Somerset's signature in black ink alongside noticeably brighter background colors on the paper. These notes are no longer legal tender as they were withdrawn in 1988, having been replaced by the £1 coin in 1983.While no longer used for daily transactions, they are collected, with circulated notes
