1977 A Landmark First: These were the first spacecraft to successfully land on the Martian surface and transmit photographs back to Earth. The "Color" Controversy: The focus on "The Colors of Mars" refers to a significant scientific and public debate. Early images from Viking 1 were initially calibrated to show an Earth-like blue sky. Scientists later corrected this to reflect the actual pinkish-red hue caused by iron-rich dust in the thin atmosphere. The Search for Life: A primary goal was to search for signs of life. While the landers detected unexpected chemical activity in the soil, the scientific consensus eventually concluded there was no clear evidence of living
