Oil on canvas, framed. Attributed to Chaim Soutine (1893–1943). Depicting a half-length figure in a blue garment with white cuffs and a yellow scarf, set before a swirling, multicolored background of red, orange, yellow, purple, and blue, the composition reflects Soutine’s mature Expressionist vocabulary, defined by agitated brushwork, distorted contours, and emotionally charged chromatic contrasts. Signed Soutine at the top right. Label on verso of E.J. Van Wisselingh & Co. 77.4 x 50.8 cm (30.5" x 20'), framed: 94 x 67.3 cm (37" x 26.5"). The work aligns with themes central to his portraiture of the 1920s–1930s, where sitters are rendered with heightened psychological tension and placed against turbulent, non-descriptive grounds that amplify the sense of inner unrest. Comparable treatments of expressive figuration, saturated color, and dynamic surface movement appear in the Musée de l’Orangerie, the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Tate, all holding works that demonstrate similar expressive intensity and painterly distortion.
