Oil on canvas, framed. Attributed to Remedios Varo (1908–1963). Depicting a surreal forest of tall, bare trees rising above green water in which a large red fish serves as a boat carrying two robed figures—one in blue, one in gray—engaged in an exchange while a tower-like structure with windowed compartments rises behind them, the composition reflects Varo’s mature symbolic vocabulary, defined by alchemical motifs, hybrid vessels, mystical instruments, and theatrical spatial staging. Signed R. Varo at the lower right. Label on verso of Varo Museo Nacional Mexico. 80 x 50.8 cm (31.5" x 20"), framed: 94 x 67.3 cm (37" x 26.5'). The work aligns with themes central to her 1950s–early 1960s production, where she combined esoteric philosophy, metaphysical travel, and narrative transformation within meticulously controlled, dreamlike environments. The hovering pink bird, the architectural alcove containing a blue chalice with flowing water, and the integration of fantastical machinery correspond to recurring elements in Varo’s oeuvre. Comparable works featuring visionary journeys, enigmatic figures, and architectonic interiors appear in the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, the Museo Nacional de Arte, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art, all holding examples that demonstrate similar technical precision, symbolic density, and surreal narrative construction.
