Serial Number: 60235 Winchester 1911 (SL) Shotgun 12 GA 'Widowmaker' The Winchester Model 1911 is one of the more unusual Winchester shotguns. It was developed after Winchester was unable to use John Browning's Auto-5 design (which Browning later took to FN and Remington after negotiations with Winchester broke down). Because of patent restrictions, Winchester engineered a different operating system. The Model 1911 is sometimes nicknamed the "Widowmaker." That nickname comes from an unsafe practice some owners used: If the bolt became difficult to retract, some people would place the butt of the gun on the ground and push down on the barrel to open the action. If the gun was loaded or malfunctioning, this could cause an accidental discharge. The gun itself isn't inherently prone to firing on its own when functioning properly, but that method of charging it was dangerous enough that the nickname stuck. ***Firearms will be previewed and picked up during business hours at Broad River Mercantile (803) 385-1240.
