“The Prince” Burmese Kalaga Gold Embroidered Tapestry – Shadowbox Framed, Singapore Gallery Mounted. Dimensions: 42” H x 42” W x 2.75 D. The shadowbox presentation is absolutely first-class, with the black raw silk background completely wrapped on back and sides. Hanging hardware is heavy-duty, and the backing is solid wood. Excellent condition, including the overlay protective glass. Kalaga textiles are: -Built from layers of fabric (felt, velvet, cotton) -Then hand-embroidered with gold thread, sequins, beads -Figures are often slightly raised/padded, giving a 3D effect This technique creates a rich, almost jewel-like surface. It’s part of the traditions of goldwork embroidery, which have existed in Asia for thousands of years. This is an especially nice example of the Kalaga technique.
