United States Nesbitt Issue postal stationery cut square from the 1853–1861 period (commonly dated 1854–60 in general references).IdentificationDesign: Embossed/printed circular indicium showing a left-facing profile of George Washington.Inscription: “THREE” arched at the top and “CENTS” at the bottom.Color: Red / orange-red.Format: Cut square (the stamped portion cut from the original envelope). The cut is irregular and relatively close to the design (almost cut-to-shape in places).Paper: Appears buff / yellowish (common for these issues).Scott Catalogue numbers: Most likely U10 (3¢ red, Die 5, on buff paper). It could also be the related U9 (same design on white paper). These belong to the first Nesbitt stamped envelopes.These were produced by George F. Nesbitt & Co. and were among the earliest U.S. stamped envelopes. Multiple dies exist; Die 5 is one of the more frequently encountered types for the 3¢ red.
