1861 Issue, Perf 12 — Scott 65 (or possible 64 shade)Thank you for the perforation confirmation. Gauge 12 places this firmly in the 1861 National Bank Note Company issue.IdentificationScott 65 — 3¢ Rose / Brown Red (the common shade)Possible rare shades: Scott 64 (Pink) or 64a (Pigeon Blood Pink)Design matches the 1861 Washington (profile facing left, “U.S. POSTAGE” at top, “THREE CENTS” at bottom). The heavy black cancel and overall appearance are typical of used examples from this period.Color Assessment (Swedish Tiger / Specialist Standards)Swedish Tiger and specialized references list these main shades for the 1861 3¢:Pink (Scott 64)Pigeon Blood Pink (Scott 64a) — distinctive bright pink with a slight bluish cast; the rarestRose Pink (Scott 64b)Rose / Brown Red (Scott 65) — by far the most commonYour stamp shows a pinkish-red / faded rose tone with some oxidation and a heavy cancel. From the photos alone it most closely matches a typical Scott 65 rose shade. True Pink or Pigeon Blood Pink are much brighter, cleaner, and more distinctive in person Used, average centering, heavy cancel that obscures part of the design, some surface wear and toning. Typical of a common used example. If a genuine Scott 64 Pink or 64a Pigeon Blood Pink:These are scarce. Used examples with solid color and certificates can range from several hundred dollars (64) into the low thousands (true 64a), depending on centering, cancel, and soundness. However, the photos do not strongly support a rare shade claim.Bottom line: Treat it as a common Scott 65 unless expertized.
