Scott R228 – 1917 1¢ Carmine Documentary Revenue Stamp, Perf 11Genuine U.S. Internal Revenue Documentary Stamp – Scott #R228Denomination & Design: 1¢ carmine rose/red with large numeral "1" in a central oval, surrounded by intricate geometric/lattice pattern. Inscriptions include "U.S. INTERNAL REVENUE" at top and "DOCUMENTARY" at bottom. Classic early 20th-century revenue design.Perforation: Gauge 11 (as specified).Condition: Used with a bold manuscript or handstamp cancel (typical for revenues). Sound example with good color; minor aging/toning and perfs as common for these workhorse stamps (see photos). No major faults noted.Watermark/Paper: Standard for the issue (watermark 191R variety possible).Issue: Series of 1917 Documentary revenues—used on a wide variety of legal and financial documents (deeds, contracts, etc.) to pay the required tax.
